Jicama and carrot salad - Angie - 01-07-2009 I lived in Los Angeles while my children were younger and Jicama was one veggie that I saw a lot. I tried it once and thought it tasted more like a peeled white potato that was just a little sweet. I have recently been on a veggie dish kick and saw some in my local fruit and veggie market so I bought it. There were many recipies on the net for variations so I thought I would put something together with things I had on hand. This is the result. [attachment=40] This is everything I used for the salad [attachment=41] This is what it looks like when complete [attachment=42] This is one I found online I wish I would have tried this recipe. I have to admit, the taste of Jicama still doesn't make me want to eat it much and I have recently found out that it is very starchy so I don't see that there is any health benefit. I am on a quest to find different veggies to eat that will make me want to consume more per day. Jicama doesn't really fit the bill fer me. RE: Jicama and carrot salad - Twitchin Kitten - 01-09-2009 wow, you are on a veggie kick! I usually try things like that when it's warmer outside. Right now we're chowing down on stews and soups. And, I have to admit, your 'review' on this veggie didn't make me want to try it at all! But what IS nice is all the variety you have available to you. I swear my town eats nothing but baby food! The produce aisles are so bland it isn't funny. Finding ingredients for my basic every day meals is hard enough nevermind trying to find something "exotic". RE: Jicama and carrot salad - Angie - 01-11-2009 I know my review was on the discouraging side but I have to admit, I don't think I will have this veggie in any other dish, unless I happen to try a dish that has it and it actually excites my senses enough to try it again...hahaha RE: Jicama and carrot salad - Angie - 01-12-2009 ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*CORRECTION~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I gave the wrong report on Jicama Meeee sooooo swowy [attachment=43] This is Jicama, I just purchased some yesterday and it tasts good! [attachment=44] THIS is Yucca root. I used this in my dish and it taste like a potato that is just a little sweet. But it is also USED like you would a potato. I found a wonderful recipe for Yucca cakes (kinda like crab cakes without the crab). [attachment=45] It sound delicious and looks appetizing too. I mixed these two up because the frackin' fresh veggie market had them displayed under the wrong signs So to clearify, I used the Yucca root in a Jicama recipe and that has to be the reason why the taste was not at all worth a good recommendation. I purchased some Jicama yesterday and immediately cut it open so I could taste. It is very good and not too sweet. I will try to make the salad shown in the last pic of post #1 in this thread. I will return with my report RE: Jicama and carrot salad - Twitchin Kitten - 01-14-2009 You crack me up. But yeah, supermarkets are notorious for putting "exotic" fruits and veggies in the wrong places. That's why the better markets have little pictures for each item so the inept help knows what to put where and what it looks like! I've yet to find a good firm and not mushy turnip this winter! I want to make pickled turnips but every store I've been to they're all mushy. I got so fed up that the last one I was in had the produce manager there and I gave him an 'education' he's not going to forget! It's illegal to keep BAD FOOD on the damn shelf! |
